World – A pair of medals on the subject of explorers, Marco Polo, Vasco de Gama

Marco Polo was a Venetian merchant and explorer, who along with his father and uncle was one of the first Europeans to travel along the Silk Road, came to China, visit the Mongol ruler Kublai Khan and even toured India and Tibet. The story of his travels is told in his book "The Travels of Marco Polo". The Polo family lived in China for 17 years before returning to Venice.

Vasco da Gama was a Portuguese explorer, the first to arrive directly by sea from mainland Europe to India. De Gama was sent by King Manuel I of Portugal in 1497, with the aim of establishing a maritime trade route between Portugal and the Far East.
